Before and After with Rub N Buff

I had had my eye out for a settee for a while and came across this lovely piece on Craigslist.  The style was exactly what I was looking for and my Dad helped me pick it up, load it and then even secured all of the parts for me (it was a bit wobbly).

The settee was filled all kinds of things- must of which we didn't recognize- maybe horsehair?
Dad took that all out too- an act of love for sure!

I had thought I might paint the piece white but decided that I should try something more exciting.  After trying a coat of white, I changed the plan and went metallic.  It was my first time using rub n buff on a big piece, and I was super excited at how easy it was to work with.

The product is lovely to experiment with and comes in an array of colors.
It can be found online or at almost any craft store.

I covered the piece first in the gold leaf.  In the beginning, I tried using a cloth but it honestly just works best if you use your finger to put the finish on.  I then went back over the piece with the pewter, brushing my fingers slightly over the piece and allowing it to follow the natural embellishments of the settee.

I have also read that, to extend the drying time of the rub n buff, spraying small amounts of deglosser as you work can be helpful.  I did not do this on this piece, but it does dry quickly so this
may be helpful.

I chose Evening Scroll Stone by Waverly for the upholstery and although the fabric is light is has been quite durable.

Brought back to life with new springs, straps and foam (and no more horse hair!)

And here she is.

I love how the sun catches the soft metallic shades and how the piece looks
different in every change of light.  The fabric is a fun twist and gives new life to a lovely vintage find.
